Reaching out to kids in our neighborhood

In 1973, the session of Bethany Presbyterian Church initiated a “seed fund” for the use of its manse, located at 2984 Dewey Avenue, as a Community Resource Center.  In January of 1994  the then, associate pastor, in conjunction the  Church and Community Mission Committee (C&CM) developed a proposal for the use of “2984”. Under the philosophy “Dare to Dream.”  Potential programs were identified based on input obtained through neighborhood surveys, meetings with public school representatives and community leaders.  As a result, an after school program aimed at elementary age children was identified.  In June of 1994, Bethany Two Doors was created.

Throughout its history, Two Doors Program has achieved greater success than anticipated.  Church, school and community support and encouragement have been very positive.  In the winter of 1997, a neighborhood school principal requested that Two Doors expand its programs to include a Kindergarten Language Development component.  A pilot program was initiated and ran successfully from March 1998- June 1999.  We have run successful short-term projects that include Parent support groups, Preschool story hours and six consecutive years of Summer Youth Programs.

In 1999, the Board of Directors voted to pursue autonomy from the parent organization and pursue Incorporation.  The Incorporation  process was completed on December 15, 2000.

The Two Doors program has been successful because of the commitment and dedication of many volunteers throughout the past ten years.   This exceptional program benefits not only the children and families who participate but those who diligently serve the children as well.  We have found that the seniors, youth and community members who volunteer in our programs find personal satisfaction and feel more connected with the community as a result of the relationships that that are formed between clients and volunteer staff.
